Preventative winter driving can help during winter weather road conditions

As temperatures drop and weather conditions worsen, it's important to practice preventative driving to avoid an accident.

Sergeant Jake Angle of the Missouri Highway Patrol says motorists should begin to take measures to prepare for slicker roads.

"People just need to, for a lack of a better term, get into winter mode.  They need to slow down, stay off the brakes when we're talking about icy or snow-covered road conditions.  They just need to plan ahead. Keep that distance from the vehicle in front of you.  Think about those turns before you get to those turns so you're not breaking hard. It's really all about getting in that mindset of these are slick roads, dangerous conditions, we need to slow down and just plan a little bit, plan ahead."

Angle also says motorists should plan ahead and carry supplies in the event of an accident.

"Right now would be a great time to kick the tires and check the belts, check your radiator, your antifreeze levels, things like that.  Make sure that vehicle is in good shape to go for the winter.  It's always a good idea to make sure you've got that phone charger in there so if something does happen, you become stranded or broke down or you slide off the roadway or whatever the case may be, you can call for assistance.  It might be a great to throw in a coat in there or extra stocking cap, maybe a blanket or two."

The Missouri Highway Patrol asks motorists to drive responsibly, put their phones down, and always wear a seatbelt.
